We’re excited to share some big (and very old!) news: digitized copies of The Frankfort Sun are now available online through the Ohio Memory Project.
You can access The Frankfort Sun in a couple of places on our website:
- Genealogy & Research: Look for the Research Databases menu on the right and select CRCPL Digital Newspaper Collection: The Frankfort Sun
- eLibrary under Newspapers & Magazines
Here’s the direct link to the collection: https://ohiomemory.org/digital/collection/p16007coll150
This project began thanks to Rick Starr of Frankfort, who generously brought us a small stack of very fragile The Frankfort Sun newspapers from the 1920s. These papers were brittle and clearly well-loved—true pieces of local history that needed careful preservation.
After scanning, we worked to improve the files for readability and text searchability before handing them off to the Ohio Memory Project. Their team applied OCR (optical character recognition), making the newspapers fully searchable by text. To capture every headline, ad, and article, the top and bottom halves of pages were carefully merged to make sure nothing was lost.
We hope to be able to continue expanding our digital archive and preserving more pieces of local history for future generations. Dive in and discover something new!
