For the past seven years on Armed Forces Day, the library has hosted a Military Appreciation Picnic. It is a community picnic, and all are welcome. This year we were lucky to have beautiful weather, which helped build attendance. Visible throughout the crowd were military hats and shirts, letting all know in what branch of the military each served, in what war, and numbers and names of their units. It’s a good reminder that vets are everywhere in our community, and that they deserve to be honored.

The Ross County Veterans Council cooks hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch, and other businesses and organizations donate food and door prizes. There is a proclamation by the mayor declaring the day “Military Appreciation Day” in Chillicothe. The color guard presents the American flag, the National Anthem is sung, the Pledge of Allegiance recited, and all in attendance participate with gusto. There are some tears shed, but the atmosphere is a joyful, hopeful one.

Our small Military Committee is proud to give this small gift to those whom have done so much for us. We also honor their families for all they have sacrificed, along with the service members. We would like to thank the many businesses and organizations who contributed prizes, food, and helped to make the day special:
