“Wake Up and Read For a Better-Read Better-Informed America”

For the past 60 years, the American Library Association has designated the second week of April as National Library Week. What initially started as a united mission to get Americans to read more, has turned into a national celebration of all the things modern libraries are about (and it’s not just books!).

The graphics from the first National Library Week featuring a bald eagle were meant to stir civic pride. While reading is still a core component of public library services, this year, the slogan is Libraries Lead and reflects everything from maker spaces to kids’ programs.Image result for 2018 national library week

Over the years, National Library Week’s purpose has shifted from promoting reading to promoting awareness, advocacy, and funding. The Ohio Library Council designates a day during the week for librarians across the state to travel to Columbus to met with legislators to discuss core services and the value of continued state funding for public libraries. We share stories about program, detail challenges, and, of course, thank them for their continued support of libraries. You, of course, are always invited to let elected officials know how you use the library and what it means to your family.

Maybe buy one of each!

This year, CRCPL is celebrating National Library Week by unveiling two new mugs that you can pick up at your local branch. Whether you’re a tea or coffee drinker, your hot beverage will taste better when you show everyone how much you value your library. Each mug costs just $5 (tax included).
